Apprehensive about Apprenticeships?

According to IPSOS, “Three fifths of UK workers (61%) believe that on-the-job-skills training or apprenticeships are more valuable for preparing people for work today than traditional university degrees.”

Are you still on the fence about apprenticeships? As the UK manufacturing industry undergoes a digital and green transformation, apprenticeships are more relevant than ever. It might just be the perfect time to reconsider. Far from being seen as low skill, low paid roles, apprenticeships are available in a wide range of roles that vary from the more traditional types to high end, future-proofed roles. These can play a critical role in the future commercial viability of your organisation.

Apprenticeships can Unlock Success for UK Manufacturing

According to IPSOS, “Three fifths of UK workers (61%) believe that on-the-job-skills training or apprenticeships are more valuable for preparing people for work today than traditional university degrees.”

Are you still on the fence about apprenticeships? Did you know that you can help your apprentices complete a Degree Apprenticeship? In fact, starts in degree-level apprenticeships (level 6 and 7) have grown to 46,800 – representing 13.9% of all starts in 2022/23 according to the most recent government information.

Gone are the days of apprenticeships being limited to traditional, low paid, low skilled trades. Today, apprenticeships are available in a wide range of roles that vary from the more traditional types to high end, future-proofed roles e.g. carbon capture, automation and diigital manufacturing.

A New Era for Manufacturing

As the UK manufacturing industry undergoes a digital and green transformation, apprenticeships are more relevant than ever. It might just be the perfect time to reconsider.

The new Labour government came to power at the start of July and heralded a new industrial strategy for the UK focussed on growing the economy. It shows that the government's commitment to revitalising manufacturing is unwavering.

The first announcement focused on the delivering of a fossil fuel free electricity system by 2030. While ambitious, the potential economic benefits for the manufacturing sector include increased demand, job opportunities, and technological advancements.

The second element of the strategy emphasises using data and AI to improve public services and productivity. For manufacturing, this means adopting smart manufacturing practices, predictive maintenance, and data-driven supply chain management. By leveraging data effectively, manufacturers can enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and optimise production processes and will require updated skills.

With a focus on net-zero initiatives and AI-driven innovation, the industry is poised for significant growth. However, this growth hinges on a skilled workforce - one that will need to be developed through apprenticeships to fill the skills gap and drive technological advancements.

The Skills Gap: A Major Challenge

Despite the industry's potential, a skills shortage is a pressing concern. The rapid pace of technological change means that traditional qualifications may not be enough. This is where apprenticeships come in.

The Power of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships typically involve one day of university study per week, with the remaining four days dedicated to hands-on experience in a relevant workplace. This hands-on approach ensures that learners develop the practical skills needed to succeed in today's manufacturing environment.

Key benefits of apprenticeships for manufacturing:

  • Practical skills: Apprentices learn from experienced professionals in your organisation. They learn the company standard, rather than something abstract from a textbook. This means you can shape each apprentice to the needs of the organisation.
  • Earn while they learn: Apprentices gain valuable work experience and income which makes them more likely to stay with your company in the long term.
  • Industry-recognised qualifications: Apprentices can obtain qualifications that employers value without paying high education fees. This allows you to set the standard that fits with your culture.

Modern Apprenticeships: More Than Just Traditional Trades

Apprenticeships are changing with the times. Gone are the days of apprenticeships being limited to traditional, low paid, low skilled trades. National Apprentice Week has a list of roles that show the wide range of apprenticeships available, including:

  • Engineering
  • Automation
  • Quality control
  • Production management
  • Digital manufacturing

Investing in the Future of your Business

By investing in apprenticeships, you're not just training new employees; you're investing in the future of your business.

Apprenticeships can help your business:

  • Boost productivity: Apprentices contribute to productivity early in their training, which enhances overall profitability.
  • Reduce costs: Investments in apprentice training foster loyalty and reduce the high costs associated with staff turnover.
  • Improve innovation: Apprentices offer a motivated, diverse workforce with fresh ideas.
  • Not just textbook: Apprentices integrate into company culture from the outset, aligning their development with corporate objectives.

What’s Holding Back Apprenticeships?

In The Times recently (6th September), it was reported that while the manufacturing sector is showing signs of optimism, "It also wants ministers to sort out problems with the apprenticeships levy policy, brought in nearly a decade ago to boost training. According to Make UK, it has resulted in a “disastrous” 40 per cent drop in apprentice starts."

While there might be legacy issues to deal with, the future is bright - so long as the government can deliver on its promise of change.
